When visiting Taipei, many travelers choose to stay around Taipei Main Station for convenience.

Hotels near Taipei Main Station offer direct access to the Airport MRT, TRA and HSR train station, and Taipei MRT (metro) system. The area also has abundant restaurants and is within walking distance of popular spots such as Ximending, Ningxia Night Market, and Dihua Street.

However, what many travelers don’t realize before arriving is just how enormous and confusing the Taipei Main Station area can be. There are actually three separate complexes referred to as “Taipei Main Station”, and the vast network of underground malls and pedestrian tunnels connecting them feels like a maze.

In this guide, I’ll introduce the different areas around Taipei Main Station, help you decide which part of the station district is best for your stay, and recommend hotels for every budget.

I’ve personally stayed in several Taipei Main Station hotels and regularly collect feedback from members of my Taiwan Travel Planning group, allowing me to combine firsthand experience with recent traveler reviews to choose the hotels featured below.

Understanding Taipei Main Station Area

A map of Taipei Main Station with the Airport MRT, train station, and MRT station labeled
The three complexes forming Taipei Main Station

Before choosing the best area to stay near Taipei Main Station, it helps to understand that there are three different station complexes, each sometimes referred to as “Taipei Main Station.” Together, they form the expansive Taipei Main Station district.

All three stations are connected by an extensive network of underground malls and pedestrian tunnels, which can be multi-level and more complex to navigate than maps suggests. Visitors often describe it as a maze.

To give you a better idea of how complex the station is, here is a beautiful 3D map Taipei Main Station, including all three complexes and their connecting tunnels.

Complex 1: Airport MRT Station

Inside the Taipei Main Airport MRT Station

The Airport MRT station is where many travelers arrive at Taipei Main Station (A1) from Taoyuan International Airport (A12-13). The line is indicated by light and dark purple lines on the map.

This line is operated by Taoyuan City, not Taipei. While there is a visible building at street level, the platforms themselves, and much of the station, are located deep underground. There’s even a taxi pick-up and drop-off point at B1 in the station.

Underground tunnels from the Airport MRT station connect to Beimen MRT station on the Green Line (best for getting to Ximending), TRA/HSR station, and Taipei Main MRT station.

Hotels north of Taipei Main Station are especially close to the Airport MRT station.

Complex 2: TRA/HSR Station

View from above of the large Taipei Main Station building with orange roof
Taipei Main TRA/HSR Station

The TRA/HSR Station, also called Taipei Train Station, is the large, unmissable building where Taiwan Railways (TRA) and High Speed Rail (HSR) trains depart for destinations across Taiwan, with the train platforms located below ground.

Tickets are purchased from the ground floor hall, while 2F has a large food court.

From B1, there are underground walkways to the Airport MRT, MRT station, and several underground malls (M Mall, K Mall, Z Mall, and Y Mall). Trains and HSRs depart from B2.

Hotels north, south, and east of Taipei Main Station can all be quite close to the TRA/HSR Station, but waking times can vary.

Complex 3: Taipei Main MRT Station

A row of spots for swiping in to an MRT station in Taipei, with little green arrows denoting where to go in.
Taipei Main MRT Station

Finally, Taipei Main Station is a stop on the Taipei City MRT system, where the Red and Blue metro lines intersect.

Unlike the train station, this station does not have an obvious building above ground. Instead, numerous street-level entrances lead to the mainly underground station.

Underground walkways lead to the TRA/HSR Station, Airport MRT, and several underground malls.

Hotels to the south and east of Taipei Main Station are more convenient to access Taipei Main MRT station. For hotels to the north of the station, it is usually easier to talk to Beimen or Zhongshan MRT stations.

Best Area to Stay around Taipei Main Station

A custom map of Taipei Main Station and the three areas of hotels around it
The three main hotel areas around Taipei Main Station

Now that we’ve covered the main station complexes, the next step is choosing which part of the Taipei Main Station district to stay in.

Because the station complexes are so large and complex, choosing the right hotel area can save you 10-20 minutes of walking time every day during your visit.

For this guide, I’ve grouped hotels into three clusters around the station (south, north, and east), each with its own advantages and drawbacks.

South of Taipei Main Station (Ximending side)

Restaurants that are open all night in Taipei
Busy area south of Taipei Main Station

The area directly south of Taipei Main Station has the largest concentration of hotels and restaurants, but this area does feel (and sound) very busy.

This area is closest to the popular Ximending neighborhood and offers the best overall proximity to all three Taipei Main Station complexes. Most accommodations here fall into the budget and midrange categories rather than luxury.

But, note that it can be noisy from traffic and many hotels occupy higher floors of mixed-use buildings, so elevator wait times are common.

Choose this area for the best overall convenience and array of budget and midrange hotels, but traffic noise and elevator waits can be downsides.

If being close to Ximending is major factor for you, see my recommended hotels in Ximending, which is just a few blocks away.

North of Taipei Main Station (Airport MRT side)

Looking up at the exterior of Taipei Bus Station
Taipei Bus Station just north of Taipei Main Station

The area north of Taipei Main Station provides especially convenient access to the Airport MRT, TRA/HSR train station, and Taipei Bus Station.

It is also the closest to Ningxia Night Market and Dihua Street. Once you cross Civic Boulevard, the smaller side streets in this area tend to be quieter.

However, this area is farther from Taipei Main MRT. For most hotels in this area, Beimen or Zhongshan MRT stations may actually be closer. This area has the best selection of hostels, along with one major luxury hotel (Palais de Chine).

Choose this area for proximity to the Airport MRT, best hostels, or for the best luxury hotel, but prepare for further walks to the Taipei city MRT.

East of Taipei Main Station (Zhongxiao Side)

Busy Zhongxiao East Road in Taipei with several cars driving by
Zhongxiao East Road

The area east of Taipei Main Station has only a small number of hotels worth considering. These are very close to the TRA/HSR and MRT stations but are the farthest from the Airport MRT.

Choose this area if one of these specific hotels appeals to you and Airport MRT proximity is not essential.

Hotels South of Taipei Main Station

The dense urban area south of Taipei Main Station is packed with hotels, especially on the low budget side, plus a few excellent midrange ones.

These hotels offer quick access to all parts of Taipei Main Station, plus the shortest walking time to Ximending Pedestrian Shopping Area (10-15 minutes from most).

Many of these hotels are located on the upper floors of mixed-use buildings. This can come with nice city views, especially at the midrange to higher end, but also long elevator waiting times.

I’ve ordered the below hotels from cheapest to most expensive.

Meworld Hotel

Inside a double room at Water Meworld Hotel near Taipei Main Station
One of the cheapest hotels near Taipei Main Station

For visitors on a shoestring budget who still want a private room, consider Meworld Hotel (see on Booking / Agoda), also called Water Meworld.

The hotel’s location is excellent, directly opposite the Airport MRT and TRA/HSR station. Rooms are small and some guests complain about cleanliness, while wait times for the elevator can be long (you get what you pay for).

Upgrading to a deluxe room only costs slightly more, but most have windows with views of Taipei Main Station.

The hotel lobby is on the 7th floor of Asia Plaza Tower. From Taipei Main Station, follow the signs to Z Mall then take Exit Z2 (stairs required), while Exit M8 is about one block away and has escalators. For reaching the TRA/HSR platforms or Airport MRT, you’ll find it simplest to walk at street level.

Finders Hotel Fuqian

Collage of four images of kid-friendly facilities in Finders Hotel Fuqian near Taipei Main Station
Budget family-friendly hotel

Finders Hotel Fuqian (see on Booking / Agoda) is another affordable option, especially for families, thanks to its kid-friendly facilities.

Amenities include a children’s play area, foosball table, 24/7 complimentary snacks and instant noodles, and a breakfast buffet.

The hotel is located slightly farther from the main station district (about a 15-minute walk), but this also places it closer to Ximending.

It’s also just steps from 228 Peace Memorial Park, which has a playground, and National Taiwan Museum, which is very kid-friendly, with lots of animals and a dinosaur exhibit in the Land Bank building across the street.

Like many properties in the area, elevator wait times can occasionally be an issue. From Taipei Main, take Exit Z6 and walk south. For exploring the city, NTU Hospital Station on the Red Line is just a hint closer.

Hotel Relax (Branch I, II, III)

Collage of three images of the different Hotel Relax branches near Taipei Main Station
Hotel Relax’s three branches, all south of Taipei Main Station

Hotel Relax Branch I (see on Booking / Agoda), Branch II (see on Booking / Agoda), and Branch III (see on Booking / Agoda) are my top picks for budget private rooms near Taipei Main Station. These are frequently recommended by members of my Facebook group.

While not the absolute cheapest, they each offer a 24-hour front desk, laundry facilities, free tea and coffee in the lobby, and slightly more comfortable rooms than ultra-budget properties in the area. They also have family rooms.

Each branch is a little different, but all are conveniently located a block or two south of the station area. Each guest receives a voucher for a free beer at a nearby restaurant.

Of the three, Branch III gets my vote for its ground-floor lobby, which makes arrival easier without needing to locate elevators inside a shared building.

To reach any of these, take Exit Z4 or Z6 from the MRT station and walk 1-2 blocks south. Again, stick to ground level for walking to the TRA/HSR or Airport MRT stations.

Roaders Plus

View of Taipei Main Station from my room at Roaders Plus

One of my personal favorite hotels near Taipei Main Station is Roaders Plus (see on Booking / Agoda).

The hotel occupies the 24th to 35th floors of a tall building, meaning every room has impressive city views. You’ll have to pay more for ones that face the direction of Taipei 101. My room here was on the small side, but the view more than made up for it.

Roaders Plus is also highly family-friendly, with complimentary popcorn and snacks in the lobby (it feels like you’re arriving at a cinema), movie nights, and dedicated children’s playrooms. While some guests complain about noise from kids, I didn’t hear any during my stay.

Travelers without children may prefer the next entry, which offers similar views, but with a more design-oriented atmosphere.

To reach the hotel from the MRT station, take Exit Z4, which has an elevator to street level. From there, take the building elevators to the 4th floor lobby. It is especially close to the Airport MRT station.

Note that Roaders Plus Theme (see on Booking / Agoda), located on floors 5–12 of the same building, is listed separately online. It’s essentially the same hote, and check-in is from the same lobby, but the views from these rooms aren’t as good because they aren’t as high up.

The same hotel group also operates Roaders Hotel Zhonghua (see on Booking / Agoda) nearby, another family-friendly option, but without the elevated city views.

citizenM Taipei North Gate

Tech-forward room at citizenM

For travelers seeking a modern, design-focused stay, citizenM Taipei North Gate (see on Booking / Agoda) is one of the most stylish upper-midrange hotels near Taipei Main Station.

Opened in 2017, the hotel is part of the international citizenM brand, known for contemporary interiors, compact but efficient rooms, and tech-forward features such as tablet-controlled lighting and climate settings.

Rooms are small but thoughtfully designed, often with excellent city views from higher floors. The hotel is in a dedicated building, which means no elevators shared with other businesses.

The hotel sits just west of the main station area, roughly halfway between Taipei Main Station and Ximending, and is especially close to Beimen MRT Station and the historic North Gate landmark.

If you want to walk there mostly underground from Taipei Main Station, just take Z Mall all the way to the western end end (exit Z10). But, to be honest, it’s a bit of a trek. For exploring the city, you’ll be much closer to Beimen MRT on the Green Line.

Caesar Park Taipei

Exterior view of Caesar Park Hotel Taipei Main in the evening
Hotel directly opposite the train station

A prominent landmark directly opposite Taipei Main Station, Caesar Park Taipei (see on Booking / Agoda) is a large full-service hotel housed in a dedicated building with its own lobby and elevators.

The distinctive whitish-gray exterior with colorful panels beneath the windows makes it easy to spot from the station plaza.

The hotel offers spacious rooms and direct basement-level access to the MRT at B1, while Exit M6 (or M8 for escalator) also leads conveniently toward the property.

Although the location is exceptionally convenient, this hotel is rather dated, both inside and out.

For a more modern stay at a similar price point, I’d person opt for the nearby Palais de Chine (see final entry in next section).

Hotels North of Taipei Main Station

The area north of Taipei Main Station is a touch quieter than the area to the south, especially once you cross Civic Boulevard and get into the smaller side streets.

This area is particularly convenient for accessing the Airport MRT station, Taipei Bus Station, and the HSR/TRA station’s northern entrance. It’s also closer to Ningxia Night Market and Dihua Street.

However, it’s further from Ximending and Taipei Main Station MRT.

When staying here, you will most likely find it easier to hop on the MRT at Beimen (Green Line) or Zhongshan (Red Line) stations.

This area has some of the best hostels around Taipei Main Station plus the best luxury hotel.

Star Hostel Taipei Main Station

Photogenic common room at Star Hostel Taipei Main

Star Hostel Taipei Main Station (see on Booking / Agoda) is my personal favorite hostel in not just Taipei but all of Taiwan.

Located on a quiet side street just north of the Airport MRT station, the hostel is super modern, clean, quiet, and welcoming. There are snacks and travel items for sale in the lobby and slippers to wear inside.

This hostel has the nicest common room I’ve ever seen, with wooden decor and huge windows letting in lots of light. It’s a zen-like space to chill out or meet other travelers. My dorm room was also very quiet, with curtain around my bed and large locker for my backpack.

Note that there’s a two-night minimum stay. Although I’ve listed it first, this hostel is usually a little pricier than the following two.

From the Airport MRT or TRA/HSR Station, just exit to the street and cross Civic Boulevard to find it. If you happen to be in the underground Y Mall (also called Taipei City Mall), which runs below Civic Boulevard, take Exit Y13.

Old Door Hostel

Another great hostel in the area that I’ve personally stayed in is Old Door Hostel (see on Booking / Agoda).

This one is even more conveniently located, as it is literally right outside exit Y13 (see previous entry), but we’re talking about a difference of two minutes here.

A hand holding up a pint glass of Taiwan beer next to the sign for Old Door Hostel

In contrast to Star Hostel’s super chill vibe, this one is livelier, with a small bar on the ground floor. When I arrived, I got a welcome drink, and later I met some friendly locals having drinks.

However, it’s not the quietest place to stay, and the safe at my capsule wasn’t large enough for my laptop. Still, it remains one of the highest rated hostels in the city.

OwlStay Flip Flop Hostel

Interior courtyard of Old Stay Flip Flop Hostel
Long-running and popular hostel near Taipei Main Station

A third hostel I want to mention in this neighborhood is the long running and very popular OwlStay Flip Flop Hostel (see on Booking / Agoda).

The hostel occupies a cool older building with internal courtyard – it feels like staying in a student dormitory. There’s a nice common room, friendly staff, and bookstore on site.

Most but not all of their dorm beds come with curtains. There are also some very reasonably priced single and double rooms.

This one is located a few blocks north of Taipei Bus Station and the TRA/HSR Station. For the MRT, you’ll find it easier to walk to Zhongshan Station.

Bee House by Cosmos Creation

Children's playroom at Bee House by Cosmic Creation hotel
Children’s playroom at Bee House by Cosmic Creation

One of the group experts in my Taiwan Travel Planning group called Bee House by Cosmos Creation (see on Booking / Agoda) her favorite hotel in Taipei (and she visited without kids).

According to her, this boutique hotel has comfy beds, free laundry, luggage storage, and is on a quiet street north of the main station area. Rooms have Japanese toilets with bidets and some have bath tubs. The cheaper rooms are quite small but priced accordingly.

This hotel is kid-friendly, with a children’s playroom with toys for toddlers and arcade games for older kids, and a free candy and snack room. Unfortunately, max room size is three people.

It’s pretty much equidistant from Beimen, Taipei Main, or Zhongshan MRT stations, so take your pick depending on which direction you want to travel in the city.

CityInn Hotel Taipei Station (Branch II and III)

Orange entrance way to CityInn Hotel near Taipei Main Station
One of three branches of CityInn Hotel around Taipei Main Station

CityInn is a popular chain business / boutique budget hotel found across Taiwan. Branch II (see on Booking / Agoda) and Branch III (see on Booking / Agoda) are right next to each other two blocks north of Taipei Main Station area.

The hotel comes with all the standard amenities a budget-oriented traveler could hope for, such as 24-hour front desk, free drinks and snacks, laundry, and good WiFi. Rooms are nicely designed but a touch small. These hotels won’t blow you away, but they get the job done.

Despite having a “family room” for four people, kids are no longer allowed. There is little difference between Branch II and III. Zhongshan MRT is the closest.

There’s also a CityInn Branch I (see on Booking / Agoda) south of Taipei Main Station, at a similar price point to Hotel Relax in that area.

Palais de Chine Hotel

Looking up at the entrance sign at Palais de Chine Hotel at Taipei Main Station
Entrance of Palais de Chine across from Taipei Main train station

My top pick for luxury hotel around Taipei Main Station goes to Palais de Chine Hotel (see on Booking / Agoda).

This hotel exudes European classical elegance with theatrical, old-world grandeur (though it won’t be for everyone). Decorations are opulent and dramatic, and visitors can even request a tour of the artworks on site.

Looking down a hallway in Palais de Chine hotel with elegant European-style furniture
A typical scene inside the hotel

Palais de Chine is home to Taipei’s first (and currently only one of two) Michelin 3-restaurant, Le Palais. Executive and Prestige rooms (I’ve got one of these booked myself for a coming stay!) come with an elaborate breakfast buffet and access to an opulent, vintage inspired VIP lounge.

The hotel is connected to Q Square Mall right across the street from the TRA/HSR station. There are underground connections, but you’re likely to get lost (don’t say I didn’t warn you!) Just cross the street at ground level.

Hotels East of Taipei Main Station

Finally, there are a few more recommended accommodations to the east of Taipei Main Station.

Geographically, these are very close to the MRT and TRA/HSR station, but further from the Airport MRT and Ximending.

There are only three entries here: a hostel, midrange hotel, and luxury hotel, so only choose this area if any one of these jumps out at you.

Taiwan Youth Hostel and Capsule Hotel

Room full of capsule dorms at Taiwan Youth Hostel and Capsule Hotel
Best hostel on south and east side of Taipei Main Station

Taiwan Youth Hostel and Capsule Hotel (see on Booking / Agoda) is the closest hostel to Taipei Main MRT and TRA/HSR station.

The hostel offers spacious capsule beds with a small counter for laptop and curtains for privacy, though mattresses are slightly firm.

Facilities are excellent, including mixed and female-only dorms, well-designed kitchen and common area, laundry machines, and 24-hour reception. As the property is located underground, there are no windows.

The hostel is directly outside MRT Exit M8, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the TRA/HSR station, but a 10+ minute walk from the Airport MRT.

Cosmos Hotel Taipei

Looking up at the front exterior of Cosmos Hotel next to Taipei Main Station
The closest hotel to the TRA/HSR station

Cosmos Hotel Taipei (see on Booking / Agoda) is physically the closest hotel to Taipei Main MRT and the TRA/HSR Station. It is practically right on top of the MRT station and just 70 meters from the southeastern corner of the train station.

Cosmos is recognizable for its signature row of international flags above its entrance.

The hotel is definitely dated, both inside and out, having first opened in 1979. Nowadays, it tends to be favored by large tour groups, so noise can be an issue.

Still, it remains as a passable midrange choice with all the usual big hotel amenities that is ultra close to the station.

MRT Exit M3 is the closest and feeds directly to both the Blue and Red lines.

Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel

Rooftop pool at Sheraton Grand Hotel Taipei
Rooftop pool at Sheraton Grand Hotel Taipei

Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel (see on Booking / Agoda) is a large international five-star property offering the classic full-service luxury hotel experience near Taipei Main Station.

The hotel features spacious rooms, multiple on-site restaurants, a well-equipped fitness center, rooftop pool, and executive lounge, making it a reliable choice for business travelers and visitors seeking familiar global-brand standards.

The hotel property is a couple blocks east of Taipei Main Station on Zhongxiao East Road, sitting just steps from the legendary Fu Hang Soy Milk breakfast shop.

From Taipei Main Station, simply ride the MRT one stop to Shandao Temple to reach the hotel. From the Airport MRT, with luggage, I would just hop in a taxi – there’s a pick-up stand inside the station.

Travelers looking for this type of hotel may consider staying in Xinyi district, which has a higher concentration of five-star properties.
