Pingxi Line

The Pingxi Line (平溪線) is a historic mountain railway in New Taipei City that winds through lush valleys, passing waterfalls and charming old streets along the way. Originally built to transport coal, today it offers one of Taiwan’s most scenic day trips from Taipei.

To plan your journey, start with my comprehensive Pingxi Railway Line guide, which explains how to ride the train, where to stop, and what to expect. The line’s most famous attraction is the breathtaking Shifen Waterfall, while nearby Houtong Cat Village charms visitors with its feline residents and hillside cafes.

Each stop along the Pingxi Line has its own character, from sky lantern launches in Pingxi to hidden hiking trails between stations. If you’re planning a longer day trip, you can easily continue to the beautiful mountain town of Jiufen, a short ride from the end of the line.
